Optometrists work in a seated position most of the day while performing eye examinations or meeting with patients to discuss their cases. they sometimes stand to perform tests. they require upper limb coordination, hand-eye coordination and steady hands to perform tests, take measurements and adjust instruments. minimal strength is required.

Optometrists must be patient and demonstrate a positive attitude toward patients. they must be comfortable meeting new people, receptive to patients' concerns and able to empathize with them.

Changes in technology and scope of practice will increase optometrists' need for many essential skills. they will need continuous learning skills to master new optometry equipment and techniques, and computer skills to take advantage of advances in information technology. optometrists will receive authorization to write prescriptions in all provinces in the near future so they will require enhanced numeracy, writing and document use skills to calculate dosages and monitor drug treatments.
